1997 Toyota T-100 Review

Capabilities of a V-8 truck with V-6 efficiency.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Introduced to the market in 1992 as a full-size pickup with a full-size eight-foot bed, Toyota kept the engine and suspension of a compact truck in the 1997 Toyota T100’s design. This truck remains one of the few without a V-8 engine, providing an economical choice for fuel, but paying poor dividends in terms of drive and acceleration.

Other criticisms at first showing include its small size (with no appeal for work truck buyers) and the lack of an Xtracab version. Toyota remedied this when the Xtracab came out in 1995. The more powerful engine that comes with the 1997 model strikingly improves acceleration as well, and Toyota claims that the T100 can beat full-size V-8 rivals.

The Range

What's New

The 1997 Toyota T100 introduces several new colors, as well as larger optional wheels and tires. The T100 also features radio pre-wiring and fabric door trim panels, as well as chrome wheel arches on SR5 models, all brand-new additions for 1997.

The T100 features power brakes, 15-inch wheels, and two different choices for its five-speed manual transmission. Optional features include a chrome step bumper and rear step bumper, a sunroof, a tonal cover, alloy wheels, a trailer hitch, a horizontal sliding window, a bed liner, and running boards. The exterior length measures 209.1 inches, the curb weight totals 3320 pounds, and the wheelbase stretches to 121.8 inches.

The interior dimensions of the 1997 Toyota T100 provide 39.6 inches of headroom, 54 inches of hip room, and 42.9 inches of legroom. Interior features include a driver front airbag, power brakes, front bench vinyl seating, and power steering. Options include a clock, cruise control, cloth seating, an AM/FM/CD/Cassette audio system, and air-conditioning.

Performance & Handling

The T100’s cornering and handling abilities seem somewhat cumbersome, but consumers report it usually has all the power it needs for capacity loads and towing. Countless customers attest to Toyota’s reliability and lasting power. The ride in the 1997 Toyota T100 remains good years later, even when riding on the original shocks. The least enjoyable part of the truck comes when driving it on the road empty, which can cause a handling problem.

Safety features on the 1997 Toyota T100 include front diver airbags and anti-lock brakes.
