2022 Toyota Tundra MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Likely improved fuel economy
  • Reputation for reliability
  • Much-needed new styling

Cons

  • No more old-school V-8

The Tundra is the larger of Toyota's two pickups. Although the current second-generation Tundra impressed us enough to earn a Truck of the Year award when it launched for 2008, over a decade later, it has gotten long in the tooth. We're expecting a redesigned third-generation Tundra for 2022, complete with a new platform, new engines, and new infotainment tech. It will compete in the full-size truck segment alongside the Ram 1500, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, and Nissan Titan.

Performance and Fuel Economy

We're expecting the 2022 Tundra to say goodbye to its predecessor's naturally aspirated V-8 and replace it with a pair of six-cylinder options. Higher trims will likely feature a version of Toyota's twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6, which produces 409 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque under the hood of the 2022 Toyota Land Cruiser.

We're expecting more basic variants to use a non-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 that currently powers the smaller Tacoma pickup. We have no details on a potential hybrid powertrain, although it would make sense given Toyota's past hybrid experience and the current direction of the pickup market.

Safety

Based on Toyota's recent launches of the redesigned Venza and Sienna, it's safe to assume the 2022 Tundra will feature Toyota's latest suite of driver assist technologies. Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist with lane tracing, automatic high-beams, and road sign assist will likely be standard. We expect other features such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system to be included on higher trims.

What Will the 2022 Tundra Look Like?

After lots of speculation and trying to peer through the shadows in Toyota's teaser images, we've finally seen an official photo of the new Tundra. Even from that sole image, it's clear that the new truck looks more modern, aggressive, and macho than its soft-edged predecessor. The new headlights are a particularly interesting element, and serious front lighting seems to be a theme on the TRD Pro model in the image. It won't be long before we see the Tundra from all angles, inside, and in different trim levels.

When Will Toyota Release the New Tundra?

Our expectations are that Toyota will reveal the third-generation 2022 Tundra in mid-2021 and that it will reach dealerships by the end of that calendar year. Entry pricing will likely hover around the outgoing model's $35,000 mark, and pricier trims will probably start around $55,000.

Technology

The 2022 Tundra aims to take a big step forward in terms of infotainment tech. Top-trim variants will include a 12.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display—up from 7.0 or 8.0 inches in its predecessor—and a large head-up display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto should be standard, as they were on the 2021 truck.
