2011 Toyota Yaris Review

Subcompact with value at bargain-basement price

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Toyota Yaris, offered as a five-door or three-door hatchback or a four-door sedan, is an economy subcompact car. It is equipped with 1.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine with 106 horsepower coupled to a four speed automatic or a five speed manual transmission.

The Yaris, which is front-wheel drive only, has a 96.9-inch wheel base, while most sedans have a 100.4-inch wheelbase. The Yaris comes with Toyota's well-known safety systems and has excellent fuel economy in the 29 mpg city/35 mpg highway range.

New for 2011

2011 Toyota Yaris is primarily a carryover from 2010 with only a few minor changes. The Yaris sedan's Blue Streak and Zephyr Blue and the hatchback's Yellow Gold and Carmine Red are no longer offered. Polar White has been replaced by Super White, and Classic Silver has replaced Silver Streak Mica. An extension to the sun visor was made in the Yaris hatchback.

Transmissions: 4-speed automatic, 5-speed manual
Body Styles: Sedan, two-and- four door hatchback

On the Outside

The Toyota Yaris sedan and hatchbacks look conservative, yet sporty, and ride on the shortest wheelbase in their class. Disc/drum brakes and 14-inch steel wheels are standard on the Yaris. A sport package is optional for the hatchback.

From the Inside

All Yaris trims seat five people, although fitting three rear passengers in the rear seat is a bit of a challenge. Air conditioning, tilt steering wheel, electric power steering, 12-volt power port, and audio prep package are standard. Power locks, auxiliary jack, and rear window wiper are optional.

Driving Performance

The Toyota Yaris can go 0-60 in 10.3 seconds, takes the quarter mile in 17.8 seconds at 75.8 mph, and stops from 60 mph in 126 feet. Handling is disappointing.

Safety Equipment

Standard on the Toyota Yaris are dual front airbags, dual front side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. Also standard are ABS with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, stability control, traction control, and tire-pressure monitoring.
