The Ford Freestar, also sold as the Mercury Monterey, was a short-lived Ford minivan. The Freestar was actually the victim of a renaming ploy conceived by Ford to boost interest in their vehicles by renaming all models to begin with the letter 'F'. The Freestar was formerly known as the Windstar, and the name change did not renew interest in the minivan as the Ford Motor Company had hoped, instead confusing consumers and killing the remaining interest in the vehicle. The Freestar was rolled out for the first time for the 2004 model year, and was last sold for the 2007 model year, which saw very low sales despite the sleek and attractive vehicle design. The minivan was considered a high quality vehicle when it was originally released, however it has since failed to keep up with the changes and innovations in the declining minivan market. The Ford Freestar will be replaced by the Ford Flex, which is scheduled for release in 2008 for the 2009 model year.
