What's New
One of the biggest changes in the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle is the option of the six-speed manual automatic transmission with manual shifting capability. New optional features for the audio system include an MP3 connection and the choice of either XM or Sirius satellite radio. Some new color options are also available. Starting with the 2005 models, new color options include Shadow Blue replacing Galactic Blue, Uni Red is replaced with Tornado Red, and the Blue Lagoon color option is no longer available.
Exterior
The 2005 Volkswagen Beetle GL has 16-inch steel wheels accompanied by a steel spare wheel. A new full-size matching all-season tire is mounted on the underbody as a spare. The rear window is equipped with a defogger to keep the window from steaming up in humid weather or getting icy in the winter. Starting with the GLS a power glass sunroof is installed to keep the cabin air cool and fresh in the summer months; this is available on all models except the GL, which is the most basic model. A power convertible roof replaces the power glass sunroof on all models, including the Beetle GL.
Interior
The 2005 Volkswagen Beetle GL convertible has somewhat limited space in the cabin in the way of head room and leg room. The front passenger and driver seats are height adjustable vinyl bucket seats and have no exciting extra features. The rear seat the GL has a folding center armrest and rear ventilation ducts. The GL hatchback has cloth seats instead of vinyl. This is the same on all models of the hatchback with remote power locks, power heated mirrors, and one-touch power windows also standard on all models. Convenience features include cruise control, power steering, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and a 12-volt outlet in the front available to charge a cell phone. The biggest difference between the GL and the other models is that the GL has only six speakers in its audio system, while the other models have eight Monsoon premium speakers. All models have options that include the CD player and MP3 playback stereo. The stereo system in the GLS convertible models is a 10-speaker system that makes up for the noise of the wind when the top is down. The Convertible GLS also has a second 12-volt outlet in the cargo area. The 2005 Dark Flint Edition has heated front seats upholstered with leather and Sirius satellite radio in addition to all the other options.
Performance & Handling
The 2005 Volkswagen Beetle's 2.0-liter four-cylinder does not offer as much power as the 1.8-liter four-cylinder with the double overhead cam, called the 1.8T (turbocharged). The 1.9-liter diesel produces 177 ft-lb of torque with its 100 horsepower, which is not very much power, but the fuel economy with the diesel engine is outstanding. The Volkswagen Beetle is a lightweight car, which makes up for the small amount of horsepower and is fun to drive. The Turbo S 1.8-liter is sportier, but overall it is not a performance car that would satisfy sports car fans.
Safety
The 2005 Volkswagen Beetle's four-wheel anti-lock brake system with ventilated front discs and solid rear discs is equipped with electronic brake force distribution to help keep the braking balanced and to avoid sliding when braking hard. Front head airbags are available.
