1999 Volkswagen Cabriolet Review

Let loose, take the top off, and enjoy the ride!

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

This Volkswagen Cabrio is a convertible derived from the Volkswagen Golf. The Cabrio replaced the respected Rabbit-based Cabriolet in 1995. This four-seat convertible looks sharp and performs with a quick and nimble elegance. The Cabrio is an affordable sporty ride that will undoubtedly turn heads. The Cabrio is available with a base and GLS trim. The base model is much more affordable since it is thousands of dollars less than the fully-loaded GLS model. The price tag is lower because the base model forgoes features like air-conditioning, power windows, cruise control, heated exterior mirrors, and an anti-lock braking system. The aforementioned features are included in the GLS trim along with alloy wheels, a leather interior trim, and fog lights. Standard includes for both available trims include a trunk cargo net, door pocket lining, and height adjustable driver and passenger sport seats.

The Range

Body Styles: convertible
Engines: 2.0-liter I-4
Transmissions: four-speed automatic, five-speed manual
Models: Volkswagen Cabrio GL, Volkswagen Cabrio GLS

What's New

The 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio now has European-inspired styling, making the vehicle more aerodynamic than ever before. The 1999 Cabrio has also added twin headlights and some attractive interior upgrades.

Exterior

The Cabrio rides on a 97.4-inch wheelbase. The car has a length of 160.4 inches, a width of 66.7 inches, and a height of 56 inches. The vehicle comes with 14-inch tires, independent front and rear suspension, and rack and pinion steering. Alloy wheels are standard with the GLS trim. Overall, the Cabrio may not be as stylish and powerful as Mustang’s convertible, but it also isn’t the cutesy Barbie car for women that it once was. This vehicle possesses style with class and sophistication that will be noticed on roadways.

Interior

The Cabrio seats four occupants. The front of the vehicle offers 38.7 inches of headroom with 42.3 inches of legroom. Legroom in the back of the vehicle is somewhat cramped at 31.1 inches. The multi-adjustable seats are amazingly comfortable.

Performance & Handling

The Cabrio, like other Volkswagens, handles like a dream. The chassis and suspension work together for a smooth road feel. Quite simply this is a really fun vehicle to drive, especially with the top down on a warm summer day or a nighttime cruise under the stars. The Cabrio is solidly constructed and well designed. There may not be a better-built convertible on the market. The engine isn’t super powerful, but it moves the Cabrio well enough to zip in and out of traffic. The ride is so smooth at high speeds that it is very easy to get a speeding ticket, especially since the Cabrio itself is an attention getting head turner.

Safety

There are no available NHTSA or IIHS crash test results for the 1999 Volkswagen Cabrio. The vehicle comes standard with driver and passenger front airbags and daytime running lights.

EPA Fuel Economy
