2022 Volkswagen Jetta MODEL OVERVIEW

Still Volkswagen's most popular non-SUV model, the Jetta enters the 2022 model year with a host of changes. The refreshed compact car receives an updated exterior design, as well as new standard technologies, new interior trim, a new engine. That's exactly what the VW will need if it wants to compete with new, impressive compact sedans including the Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra.

What's New

  • New front and rear bumper design, new wheels
  • New color options: Kings Red Metallic, Oryx White Metallic, Rising Blue Metallic
  • A 1.5-liter turbocharged engine makes its way from the Taos SUV to the Jetta
  • Revised trim lineup including new Sport trim that replaces the R-Line trim
  • GLI receives wider dual exhaust with improved acoustics
  • An 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster is now standard on Jetta; 10-inch unit is standard on the GLI
  • New rhombus cloth seats are standard
  • New Volcano Brown and black two-tone leather color scheme
  • Revised steering wheel on GLI with touch controls and red clip
  • New standard safety features including front assist with pedestrian monitoring, blind-spot monitor, and rear traffic alert

What We Think

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is a compact sedan worth considering. The pre-2022 model was once a third-place performer in our Ultimate Car Rankings, but has since fallen off in the face of newer competitors. Can the 2022 model gain back some ground? We'll see.

The Jetta has a decent foundation. Though we were never fans of the base model's low-quality cabin, that could change for 2022. Fuel economy is decent, and the cabin is spacious for a compact. The 2022 Jetta will also probably be one of the quicker compact sedans on offer, even before you consider the more performance-oriented GLI model, which delivers impressive performance when you push it. The 2022 Honda Civic is the sedan to beat, but some buyers may appreciate the 2022 Jetta's longer standard warranty.

Performance

Replacing the Jetta's previous 1.4-liter engine is a more powerful 1.5-liter turbocharged engine borrowed from the Volkswagen Taos SUV. In the Jetta, this engine makes 158 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Jetta GLI sticks with a 2.0-liter turbo-four delivering 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Safety Ratings and Features

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta comes standard with Front Assist, which consists of forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian monitoring. Blind-spot monitor and rear traffic alert are also standard for the new model year. The IQ.Drive package is available, bringing lane keep assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, and a semi-autonomous driving assistant among other features.

As of this writing, the NHTSA hasn't released complete ratings for the 2022 Jetta, but it scored five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the rollover evaluation.

Technology

For 2022, the base model comes standard with an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster. GLI models get a standard 10.0-inch unit, which is optional on the regular Jetta. Available goodies on the Jetta include a BeatsAudio sound system, wireless device charging, and a 10-color ambient interior lighting.
