For 2007 Volkswagen introduces a new version of the Passat wagon, as well as the Wolfsburg Edition. A new audio system and auxiliary input jack and a new adaptive cruise control system also debut.
The exterior of the 2007 Volkswagen Passat looks distinctly European, which makes it much more appealing than many mainstream sedans. The base features heated power mirrors. If you choose the 2.0T, then it comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, while the Wolfsburg comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, and a power sunroof. The 3.6 comes with an in-dash CD changer and unique alloy wheels. If you choose the 3.6 4Motion then you get all-wheel drive.
The Passat feels very comfortable inside, and the cabin looks well laid-out with all the controls intuitively located. The trunk of the sedan has a cargo capacity of 14.2 cubic feet, while the wagon offers a cargo capacity of 35.8 cubic feet with the second-row seats up.
Even the base comes well-equipped with leatherette upholstery, a MP3/CD player, air-conditioning, cruise control, a telescopic steering wheel, power windows, power locks, a trip computer, and keyless entry.
The 2.0T includes a power driver’s seat, chrome window frame trim, and a trunk pass-through in the rear seat. The Wolfsburg comes with heated front seats, satellite radio, and a CD changer. The 3.6 includes an in-dash CD changer as well.
Optional extras for the base remain somewhat limited, although you can get leather upholstery, a better sound system, and a navigation system for the 2.0T. Other optional extras depend on the trim and include adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, 12-way power-operated front seats, and either an aluminum or wood interior trim.
Performance & Handling
The base 2007 Volkswagen Passat and 2.0T contain a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder that gives 200 hp with 207 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, or VW offers a six-speed automatic, which comes standard on the Wolfsburg. The 3.6 and 4Motion come with a 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 280 hp with 265 lb-ft of torque; this comes with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Everything feels very precise and well-engineered. The handling feels almost sporty, due to the independent suspension and rigid structure, and the steering seem very responsive. It provides an entertaining drive and pleases those who actually enjoy driving. The only downside: it suffers from excessive road noise at higher speeds.
All models have a number of safety features that come as standard, including stability control, traction control, anti-lock disc brakes, front head restraints to prevent whiplash, a tire-pressure monitor, full-length curtain airbags, and front-seat airbags. Side rear-seat airbags remain optional for all models.
The 2007 Volkswagen Passat scores very well in government crash tests, achieving four out of a possible five stars for front-passenger protection during head-on collisions, five stars for protection of front passengers in side-impact tests, and four stars for rear passengers.
