2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 Review

An upscale interior and great on- and off-road capabilities, but diminished by the heavy weight, high price, and poor fuel economy.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 serves as Volkswagen’s sport utility vehicle. The Touareg 2 proves popular among families that need a strong vehicle for around town, in addition to a comfortable vehicle for family vacations. At same time, it also suits off-road enthusiasts.

The Touareg 2 has some drawbacks. The cargo area remains smaller than most other compact SUVs. To make matters worse, the off-road hardware weighs the Touareg 2 down, which affects fuel economy. If all that is not enough, the price on this SUV seems high. On the bright side, the Touareg 2 offers a diesel engine.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door SUV
Engines: 3.6-liter V-6, 4.2-liter V-8, 4.9-liter V-10 diesel
Transmission: six-speed automatic
Models: Volkswagen Touareg 2 VR6 FSI, Volkswagen Touareg 2 V8 FSI, Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI

What's New

The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 basically offers a refreshed version of the 2007 Touareg. With the exception of revamped front and rear fascia, a few additional features, and new optional packages, very little changes.

Some of those feature changes include reshaped headlights, grille, and bumper; larger side mirrors; and updated taillights and exhaust tips. In the cabin drivers enjoy a new instrument panel, a new stereo interface with an LCD screen, a 12-way-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless access, and four-zone climate control.

The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 classifies as a five-passenger, midsize SUV. The VR6 FSI comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, and the V8 FSI uses 19-inch wheels. The body style could be described as rugged, with an authoritative impression given by the large fender flares and wheel wells. The cargo area proves easy to access due to its low and wide opening. It also includes a convenient power liftgate; however, the Touareg 2 lacks a button in the front to shut it if you forget. The VR6 FSI also includes automated wipers and a sunroof as standard features. The V8 FSI adds bi-xenon headlights and an adjustable air suspension.

It cannot be denied that the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 has some shortcomings; however, it looks very well built and comes loaded with standard and optional luxuries. The surfaces on the dash, console, and doors are very substantial and smooth, but the cargo and cabin space remains small compared to similar SUVs in the same class.

The VR6 FSI’s standard interior features include rear parking assist, a tilt/telescopic steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, 12-way driver’s and eight-way passenger power front seats with heat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 10-speaker stereo with a CD player and satellite radio.

The V8 FSI adds real wood trim, 12-way power passenger and driver’s seats with memory functions, and leather upholstery. Most of the V8 FSI features remain available as options on the VR6 FSI. The V10 TDI adds front-passenger-seat memory functions, a heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable height for the front seat belts.

The Lux Plus Package for all models includes keyless ignition, four-zone climate control, an upgraded premium audio system, and rear heated seats. A Technology Package adds a rear-view camera, an 11-speaker sound system with a DVD/CD player, a navigation system, and a trunk-mounted six-disc CD changer.

Performance & Handling

With its heavy curb weight, the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 needs a V-6 or V-8 engine to give it plenty of pep. The ride on the road feels smooth and solid, and when equipped with the air suspension, it moves with surprising agility around corners. However, the real performance comes when the Touareg 2 goes offroad. The Land Rover does not have much on the Touareg 2 when negotiating rough and tough terrain.

At the top of the line sits the V10 TDI. It comes with a five-liter, turbodiesel engine that makes 310 hp and a colossal 553 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy reaches 15/20 mpg city/highway, and when properly equipped, the Touareg 2 can tow 7700 pounds.

The 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 comes loaded with safety features, including anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability and traction control, hill incline and descent roll-back control, side airbags in the front, and full-length side-curtain airbags. Additional safety equipment includes an anti-theft alarm system, daytime running lights, emergency braking assist, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, an engine immobilizer, fog lights, auto delay-off headlights, dusk-sensing headlights, electronic brakeforce distribution, a post-collision safety system, tire-pressure monitoring, and brake drying.

EPA Fuel Economy
