2005 Volkswagen Touareg Review

A great off-road vehicle for safety-conscious drivers.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg has only one body style and is available in the V-6 and V-8 models. As its names suggest, these models come with V-6 and V-8 engines. Both engines are coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission with auto shifting capability and overdrive. If the driver chooses, all the horsepower can be sent to either the front or rear wheels. The four-wheel drive and large engine do not give this vehicle good fuel economy, but the power available is worth it to those that want extra performance from its vehicles. Inspired by the Porsche Cayenne, it is one of Volkswagen’s high-end vehicles.

The Range

Body styles: SUV
Engines: 3.2-liter V-6, 4.2-liter V-8, 5.0-liter V-10
Transmissions: six-speed automatic
Models: Volkswagen Touareg V-6, Volkswagen Touareg V-8

What's New

The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg has been redesigned to have an extra 20 horsepower compared to previous versions. The optional navigation system was updated to a DVD-based version of the CD based system late in the 2005 model year. Instead of standard tire pressure monitoring as the old version had, the system is now optional on the 2005 model. The rearview mirror is self-dimming beginning in 2005, and the 18-inch alloy wheels add an all new style.

The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg have a decorative chrome grill. The V-6 model has 17-inch wheels, and the V-8 model has newly-designed 18-inch wheels. Both models come with a spare steel wheel and a full-size matching all-season spare tire. The windshield wipers are rain sensing, and speed sensitive for convenient automatic use and adjustment. It has privacy glass installed so the driver and passengers cannot be viewed from the outside. A rear intermittent wiper and a rear defogger are standard on both models, as are the power glass sunroof and the roof rack that gives extra cargo carrying space on the exterior. Exclusive to the V-8 model are the manual sunshades installed on the rear side windows. The rear has a manual flip up window and a liftgate door.

The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg carry several differences between the interior in the V-6 and V-8 models. The front seats in the V-6 model are height adjustable, have multi-level heating devices, and have vinyl upholstered bucket seats. Extra features for the V-8 model include 12-way power adjustable driver and front passenger seats that also have power adjustable lumbar support. The V-8 model’s front seats are upholstered with leather instead of vinyl, adding to the comfort. The rear seat has ventilation ducts for extra fresh air for the rear passengers. Cruise control, power steering, and three 12-volt outlets are available. Audio and cruise controls are located on the steering and a universal programmable remote is provided. Dual-zone climate control, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and leather and wooden trim are all standard. The audio system have 10 speakers, a single disc CD player, and speed sensitive volume control to eliminate the need to turn up the volume on the highway.

Performance & Handling

The 2005 Volkswagen Touareg has a 3.2-liter V-6 that provides 310 horsepower to the six-speed transmission. The V-8 provides even more power and the turbo-diesel V-10 has plenty of power of its own. It has a significant towing capacity of up to 7700 pounds. The confident handling is something that most previous drivers make use of. The off-road abilities are also above average and have impressed those that have tested the Touareg’s off-road capabilities. If there is a series of large bumps, this vehicle gets thrown off balance, but if they are one at a time, the suspension absorbs most of them. The shifting is smooth and easy. The V-8 engine has much better power and prowess in off-road environments compared to the V-6 engine. The torque is great in the TDI model and delivers excellent acceleration and responsiveness.

The list of safety features installed in the 2005 Volkswagen Touareg is impressive. With standard anti-lock brakes that have front and rear ventilated discs the driver can be more confident that the brakes will not overheat. The brake system is supplemented with stability and traction control as well as electronic brake force distribution. Head airbags can be found in the front and rear but only the front has side mounted airbags.
