1995 Volvo 850 Review

Nothing to look at but everything to drive.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

In its third year of production, the 1995 Volvo 850 makes some major advances in both performance and safety. By bringing higher-powered models into production as well as incorporating safety features that are the first of its kind, Volvo is challenging the traditional European leaders in the compact executive car category. More specifically, the introduction of the T-5R model provides Volvo with a model that can challenge the BMW M3 on all fronts.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 2.3-liter five-cylinder, 2.4-liter five-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, four-speed automatic
Models: Volvo 850, Volvo 850 GLT, Volvo 850 Turbo, Volvo 850 T-5R

What's New

the 1995 Volvo 850 major new addition is the new T-5R high performance model. Designed in conjunction with Porsche, the T-5R sports a highly tuned and upgraded engine with a special engine control unit, producing acceleration comparable to a late 1980s Mustang. Coupled with an upgraded suspension, the T-5R demonstrates that Volvo can build performance in addition to safety and reliability. With a limited top speed of 155 mph, it can keep stride with category leaders.

the 1995 Volvo 850 gets another addition that could rival the T-5R: a newly standard side-impact airbags across all models. Volvo is the first automaker to incorporate this feature. Side-impact airbags had been optional across all Volvo platforms and available from other manufacturers, but the standardization is a first, and eventually set the tone for future vehicle safety.

Exterior

The 1995 Volvo 850 is, much like the rest of Volvo's products, not the most beautiful car on the road. The styling is functional and the modifications of the rear taillights are a change, but it remains one of the least sexy vehicles on the road. The T-5R adds on a chin spoiler and a rear-deck spoiler, which serves functional purposes but make the appearance even more blocky and awkward.

Interior

The 1995 Volvo 850 has ample leg and headroom for five adults and plenty of storage space, even in the sedan. The decor is traditional and not much more interesting than the inside of a padded room. Extremely plain and limited, and the options do not do anything to moderate this fact.

Performance & Handling

The 1995 Volvo 850 and the GLT are all capable highway cruisers but are lacking in acceleration. The Turbo is a noticeable step up with the additional 54 horsepower and 49 lb-ft of torque. The T-5R version steps it up even further, adding on 18 more horsepower as well as more boost pressure in the turbocharger. The semi-independent rear suspension allows for a tight turning radius, but the sheer size of the vehicle limits the extent of handling.

Safety

The 1995 Volvo 850 offers standard side-impact airbags and shoulder restraints for rear-seat passengers. It continues the tradition of placing driver and passenger safety at the top of the list, earning a combined four and a half stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It also implements daytime running lights, another first for the industry.
