1996 Volvo 850 Review
A safe, sturdy Swedish machine.
Reviewed by Automotive on
The 1996 Volvo 850 is a passenger vehicle that comes as either a sedan or wagon. On one extreme, the base model is a typically appointed mid-price vehicle. On the other extreme, the Platinum Limited Edition and R models have features typically found on near-luxury vehicles. Optional equipment allow drivers to customize vehicles between the two extremes to some extent.
The 1996 Volvo 850 highlights safety as its standout feature. No matter what model is selected, it offers more standard safety features than other vehicles on the market. Many of its standard features aren’t even options in comparable models.
The Range

What's New
The 1996 Volvo 850 comes with side curtain airbags as standard equipment, and traction control is now available as an option.
Exterior
The Volvo 850 is available as a sedan or wagon. All models are available in both body types, so there are no differences based on body selection. The body design boasts the very angular and blocky look that Volvo has long been known for.
Interior
The 1996 Volvo 850 is comfortable and spacious on the inside. The standard features of the base model include power heated mirrors, power locks, power windows, an integrated child safety seat, cruise control, air-conditioning, rear window wiper, AM/FM radio, and a cassette player. The Platinum Limited Edition and R come fully loaded with features typical of near-luxury vehicles such as leather seating, automatic climate control, and a stereo system that includes AM/FM radio, cassette player, and a CD player built into one unit.
Performance & Handling
The 1996 Volvo 850 offers good overall performance. The smallest available engine, a 2.3-liter five-cylinder, still gives ample power to maintain above average acceleration and top speed. Upgrading to the 2.4-liter, five-cylinder engine gives an extra boost. This engine variation handles quite well, allowing the driver to feel completely in control.
Safety
The 1996 Volvo 850 has an excellent range of safety features that exceeds most of its competition. For a vehicle produced in 1996, it's equipped with an unusual amount of safety features. Standard features on all models include dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, an integrated child safety seat, and four-wheel anti-lock brakes. Moreover, traction control is available as an optional feature.
EPA Fuel Economy
