2011 Volvo C30 Review

Overlooked in its class because of price and market segment

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Volvo C30 is an inexpensive two-door hatchback that offers two trims: T5 and the R Design. Propelled by a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine that is joined to a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, the Volvo C30 churns out 227 horsepower. Boasting sport-tuned suspension, the T5 R Design is the sport trim.

Due to the fact the Volvo C30 is a small two-door car, the rear seating area is compromised in terms of leg room. However, the back seats can fold down to increase cargo space to 20.2 cubic feet. The C30 has Volvo's famous safety systems and gets down the road on 21 mpg city / 29 mpg highway.

New for 2011

For 2011, the C30 T5 R-Design received a new sport suspension with firmer springs and shock absorber damping and a quicker steering ratio. The fronts of both the T5 and T5 R-Design were redesigned to include a new fascia, fenders, reshaped headlights, honeycomb grille, and a more prominent Volvo badge. Orange Flame metallic was added to the exterior color palate, and Off Black/Blonde is a new interior trim.

Engine: 2.5L turbocharged I-5
Transmissions: 6-speed manual, 5-speed automatic
Body Style: 2-door hatchback
Models: T5 Hatchback, R-Design Hatchback

On the Outside

While the Volvo C30 has always had a polarizing design, punctuated by its excessively large, ovoid glass rear hatch, now the C30 has received a much more aggressive nose for 2011, including reshaped fenders, elongated, flared headlights, and a sportier grille.

From the Inside

The Volvo C30's interior is restrained but elegant and features a version of Volvo's signature waterfall-look center stack as its focal point. With the R-Design trim, you get leather seats with an embossed logo, watch-like instruments, and an R-Design steering wheel and pedals.

Driving Performance

The 2011 Volvo C30 R-Design's sport suspension has 30-percent stiffer springs, firmer shocks, and a 10 percent quicker steering ratio than previous trims.

Safety Equipment

Among the Volvo C30's standard safety equipment is Volvo's Whiplash Protection Seating System, while blind spot detection is optional.

Gas Mileage

T5 and T5 R-Design: 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway (manual); 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway (automatic)
