2000 Volvo S40 Review
Not your grandparents’ Volvo.
Reviewed by Automotive on
The 2000 Volvo S40 starts as a new vehicle for younger buyers. Volvo produces the S40 for those who may want to avoid the stigma of age previously associated with driving a Volvo. The S40 offers the usual long list of safety features expected from Volvo, but sells in a more aesthetically pleasing package to younger buyers.
The size of the sedan means a comfortable ride for four adults and a manageable one for five adults, if necessary. This adds appeal for anyone planning to transport small groups regularly.
Engines: 1.9-liter four-cylinder
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: Volvo S40
Volvo rolls out its 2000 S40 model as a more affordable option while still maintaining its customary safety features and modern appeal. The S40 offers safety and comfort in a more stylish package with this goal in mind. The 2000 Volvo S40 offers softer lines and a more appealing shape for younger drivers.
The 2000 Volvo S40 offers tinted glass, power heated mirrors, fog lights, alloy wheels, and daytime running lights. It comes in eight color varieties that enhance its appeal to younger generations. These color options include blackberry, midnight metallic, pacific blue metallic, red, silver metallic, summer green metallic, torch red metallic, and white.
A cloth interior with air-conditioning, power windows and locks, climate control, and cruise control provides occupants with a comfortable and smooth ride. An AM/FM/cassette stereo system, along with bucket seats and a center console provide further comfort to all occupants of the 2000 Volvo S40. In terms of aesthetics, however, it leaves a bit to be desired, as the interior comes in only two options–off black or silver gray.
Cargo volume reaches 13.2 cubic feet, allowing for enough storage for a weekend trip.
Performance & Handling
With a 1.9-liter, four-cylinder engine that produces 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque, the 2000 Volvo S40 delivers speed and performance. Handling on any road surface feels sure and reliable. Three modes to the transmission allow adjustments for winter, sport, or economy driving.
Dual front airbags and side airbags mark the start of an impressive list of safety features boasted by the 2000 Volvo S40. Seatbelts adjust to the driver’s height, and both front belts come equipped with pretensioners that help prevent slack in the event of a frontal collision. All five seating positions also offer three-point seatbelts for additional safety for all passengers.
The vehicle comes equipped with the WHIPS system, which allows movement in the seats to prevent whiplash if the Volvo S40 gets struck from behind. A side-impact protection system also helps keep the car’s occupants protected no matter what side an accident comes from.
In addition, an anti-theft alarm system comes standard to let drivers know the 2000 Volvo S40 will be in its parking space when the driver returns.
