2007 Volvo S40 Review

Affordable small, luxury sedan with lots of style, refinement, and comfort.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2007 S40 is one of the best small sedans that Volvo has released in a long time. This car offers nice styling inside and out, as well as good performance powertrain options. Much like many of Volvo’s other models, safety is a major priority, and it shows in the various safety features offered standard on these cars, as well as in its government and independent crash test ratings and scores.

Available in two trim levels, the S40 is well-equipped with plenty of useful and fun extras. This model offers full power accessories, 16-inch alloy wheels, and heated mirrors. Another interesting feature is the manual climate control with a pollen filter. The upper trim level also offers a trip computer and fog lights as well as several others. Overall, this model is a good choice for anyone looking for a lot of style and plenty of reliability.

The Range

Body Styles: Compact luxury sedan
Engines: 2.4-liter inline five-cylinder, turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed manual, five-speed automatic
Models: S40 2.4i, S40 T5

What's New

For the 2007 model year, there are some changes made to the Volvo S40. The all-wheel-drive T5 models are now equipped with the automatic transmission only. Stability control is standard on all models for 2007. Volvo also upgrades the audio systems by offering an optional MP3 input jack and Sirius satellite radio. The overhead console is redesigned for this model year as well. Buyers can also choose a ground effects kit, featuring side skirts and a chin spoiler.

When Volvo updated the S40, the engineers and designers truly came up with something special. This formerly sedate and bland sedan got a real refresher. As a result, the 2007 S40 is a small, yet elegant and stylish car that is sure to make an impression. With its shapely body design and assertive grille and front end, the S40 is all style and class.

The 2007 Volvo S40 is as impressive on the inside as it is on the outside. Volvo made the wise decision to use high-quality materials for the cabin, and it certainly shows. While there are many choices available in terms of trim and upholstery, there are a few that stand out. This car is available with wood or metal-like trim as well as real aluminum or a unique transparent material. Volvo also offers different upholstery options. One of the most popular is the company’s ""T-Tec"" material. It breathes well in hot weather but is also good for supporting the passenger during twists and turns in the road. Additionally, the S40 features a center stack with an elegant, Swedish design for front seat storage. Speaking of storage, as a small sedan, there isn’t a lot of room. Interior cabin space is limited, and the S40 offers a total of 12.6 cubic feet.

Performance & Handling

Overall, performance and handling is pretty good with either engine choice. With the standard 2.4-liter inline five-cylinder, acceleration can be a bit sluggish for some drivers’ tastes. However, it does offer a predictable power band that many drivers appreciate over the faster acceleration of the turbocharged option. For those looking for lots of fun driving, the turbocharged engine option is the better choice. This model is available with either a standard or sport suspension. Either one is a good choice for everyday driving, though the sport option makes highway driving rather bumpy.

Volvo has always been known as a car company interested in safety, and the 2007 S40 shows this responsibility and concern. It is equipped with front side airbags and full length curtain airbags as well. Traction and stability control are offered standard on all S40 trim levels. Anti-lock brakes are standard as well. The company has also placed head restraint seats in the four outlaying positions in the cabin.

EPA Fuel Economy

S40 2.4-liter inline five-cylinder: 19/27 mpg city/highway
S40 turbocharged 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder: 19/28 mpg city/highway
