2000 Volvo S80 Review
Comfort and style you can live with.
Reviewed by Automotive on
Volvo reengineered its S80 significantly during the 1999 and 2000 model years. The 2000 Volvo S80 maintains front drive and dramatic cosmetic differences from previous models of the Volvo S80. However, radical improvements include safety and performance enhancements. These new changes make the Volvo S80 a car that provides style and performance in a package that feels safe, allowing all passengers to enjoy travel with confidence.

Transmissions: four-speed automatic

The 2000 Volvo S80 provides few notable new features other than those applying to aesthetics, like additional color options. Most of the new features debuted during the 1999 or 2000 model design of the Volvo S80, in correlation with the exit of the S90 model.
The Volvo S80 boasts nine color options for the exterior, including black, white, silver metallic, blue metallic, dark gray metallic, green metallic, light blue metallic, moondust metallic, and red metallic. The style varies from the standard Volvo look with a pronounced character line along both the hood and rear deck. The grille looks more compact than that of the Volvo S90, which retired in 1999. Daytime running lights also add to the visual appeal of the sedan’s trim front. The 2000 Volvo S80 also has a rear window that sits at the same angle as the windshield and large taillights.
Four interior trim colors remain available for the cloth seats, including graphite gray, light sand, silver granite, and taupe. Headroom and legroom come in ample supply no matter the size of the passenger. Comfort features include cruise control, audio controls on the steering wheel, air-conditioning, power windows and door locks, and an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo system. Both the driver’s seat and passenger’s seat use power controls. The driver’s seat comes with a memory feature. Leather steering wheel trim and wood trim on the shift knob lend an air of style to the comfort-focused interior.
The rear seats split and release from inside the trunk to fold flat and provide extra storage space. The trunk, while not overly spacious, has a flat bottom to provide adequate space.
Performance & Handling
The automatic transmission adjusts to each driving style and makes acceleration smoother, even on slippery surfaces. A Geartronic feature allows drivers to shift manually if they prefer. With 197 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, the 2000 Volvo S80 not only provides speed and power but impressive handling as well. Four disc brakes, including two ventilated discs and stability control, add to the more than adequate list to provide optimal handling.
The 2000 Volvo S80 offers an impressive list of safety features to keep the driver and all of the passengers protected in a crash. Those features include three-point shoulder belts throughout the car and side-impact airbags for the front seats. The Inflatable Curtain side guard airbags, which drop down from above the windows and extend from the front pillar to the rear pillar, provide another layer of safety. The anti-lock brake and traction control systems provide optimal handling in inclement weather. Finally, the Whiplash Protection system works to minimize whiplash in the event of a rear-end collision by moving the front-seat headrests and seatbacks.
