2006 Volvo S80 Review

Luxurious interior, attractive exterior, and adequate performance.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Soft lines define the flagship 2006 Volvo S80 from other Volvo models. It is not like other cube-shaped cars Volvo has produced over the years. Instead, it offers style and elegance. Young people often criticize Volvo for its dull designs but even they will agree that this car has style. Packed with a number of luxury features, this model attracts customers from all age groups.

What's New

Volvo’s flagship S80 comes in only one model, the 2.5T, for the 2006 model year. It has a lot of standard equipment that used to be optional on previous models. For example, the 2.5T model has a dial instrument panel, a power moonroof, leather seating surfaces, a wood-trimmed steering wheel, wood inlays, and power passenger seats standard. Seventeen-inch alloy wheels and a new Instant Traction all-wheel-drive system add to the standard features for this model year.

The 2006 Volvo S80 looks dramatically different from its previous versions. For example, the windshield and rear window sit at almost at the same angle. It works well for the S80 but departs from typical Volvo designs. The grille extends forward and it makes the whole V design on the hood look even better. Headlamps sit a little lower than before, making the front look even more stylish. Doors are more pronounced and match the shoulder line. Rear doors have the rearmost windows now.

Volvo cars have always focused on comfort, and the S80 makes no exception. In fact, it boasts more comfort than any other competitor in its category. Despite classifying as a midsize family car, the S80 offers more interior space than some of its full-size competitors. It offers more than enough rear legroom even tall people. Dual-zone automatic climate control allows for comfortable long journeys. Some might not find the trunk opening wide enough, but the flat space inside totals 14.4 cubic feet. The rear seats can also fold flat from the control panel by pushing a single button. The headrest of the front passenger seat can also fold. The seats offer superior comfort, and fans inside the cushions immediately drop the temperature of the seats to a comfortable level. The center console is slim and seamlessly blends into the classic and exclusive look of the car.

Performance & Handling

A 2.5-liter, turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine that powers the 2006 Volvo S80 produces 208 horsepower. It lacks a little in this department for a car this big and heavy. The acceleration is also not very sharp. Then again, Volvo drivers rarely drive their cars fast. It has a very nice ride quality that compliments all of the gadgets inside. The suspension handles bumps on the road while the crisp steering response helps navigate the car. However, the navigation screen proves hard to read. The Volvo S80 offers a fabulous ride for a large front drive car, but many find it a bit slow.

All Volvo cars focus on safety. The 2006 S80 comes equipped with anti-lock brakes, side-impact airbags, and side curtain airbags. They contribute towards two different aspects of keeping the passengers safe. While the brakes try to prevent the accident or crash from happening in the first place, the airbags protect the passengers from injuries in case of an accident.

The Whiplash Protection Seating System protects the occupants in the front seat by moving the backrest rearwards in case of a rear-end collision. The engine mounts in the engine compartment in such a way that it travels a longer distance before harming the passengers inside. Electronic assistance systems such as a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and an Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) work constantly to reduce chances of hitting other cars by accident. BLIS informs the driver about cars in the rear blind spots. IDIS alerts drivers if they get dangerously close to another car.
