For the 2007 model year, Volvo updates the S80. While it remains roughly the same size as years past, it now offers a V-8 engine and more safety features. Volvo also pulls out the stops by adding more luxury features.
Even though the 2007 Volvo S80 gets upgraded and restyled for this model year, the sedan still has a body style reminiscent of the first generation. Built on a more rigid platform than before, the S80 features pronounced bulges and curves, with softer lines. Volvo offers this car with pull door handles. With the exception of those few changes and modifications, the S80 retains its classic look.
The interior of the 2007 Volvo S80 offers all of the elegance and comfort one would expect from a Swedish luxury sedan. The seats feel incredibly supportive and very comfortable. The back seat can accommodate two adults with plenty of legroom. In terms of interior design, the lines look smooth and flowing and Volvo has made the controls to be intuitive. The wood trim in the cabin has more of a look of paneling instead of the more common faux shiny finish. Both the front-passenger seat and the back seat fold down to allow for greater cargo space, though the trunk alone offers 14.9 cubic feet of space.
Performance & Handling
Both the inline six-cylinder and the available V-8 engine offers plenty of support and power to this midsize sedan, but overall, most test drivers have preferred the more powerful V-8. Both engines also offer a smooth, comfortable ride in a variety of driving scenarios. The handling dynamics of both trim levels aren’t necessarily as responsive as others in this class. Even the Sport package fails to truly deliver the goods in terms of handling dynamics. The S80 takes turns and corners better than its predecessors, however.
It seems as if Volvo thought of everything when planning the safety features for the 2007 S80. This car comes equipped with a great deal of high-tech safety technology. All models use full-length side curtain airbags. Additionally, the airbags in the front of the car provide both head and hip protection with separated compartments for each area of the body. Anti-lock brakes, head restraints built into the seats, and a tire pressure monitoring system come standard on all models as well. Pretensioning seat belts come standard for every seat in the car.
Volvo doesn’t stop there with the safety features. Several optional features include rear parking sensors and run-flat tires, as well as the adaptive cruise control designed to alert the driver if the S80 gets too close to the car in front of it. The blind spot information system provides another optional feature. This system monitors traffic and lights lamps along the side mirrors if another vehicle comes too close. The optional personal car communicator informs the driver if someone enters the car after the alarm has been activated (by detecting the heartbeat).
