2010 Volvo V50 Review
Capable compact wagon with distinctive styling cues
Reviewed by Automotive on
In a Nutshell
The 2010 Volvo V50 is a compact crossover-like wagon that is available in two trim levels: 2.4i Wagon and R-Design Wagon. While the V50 2.4i is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-5 engine paired to a five-speed automatic transmission, the all-wheel-drive V50 R-Design is propelled by a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-5 engine that comes with a six-speed manual transmission, with a five-speed automatic optional.
Although the Volvo V50 is a compact, it offers ample cargo space and the rear seats are moderately scaled, so the vehicle combines taste and utility. The V50 features the comfort and practicality of larger sedans, while satisfying established standards of Volvo excellence. In spite of that, initial crash test ratings are good but not excellent like other Volvo models. Estimated fuel economy is in the 20 mpg city / 31 mpg highway range, which is very good for this class of vehicle.
New for 2010
For 2010, the Volvo V50 2.4i comes with automatic climate control with a humidity sensor and an interior air quality system, while options include a navigation system and satellite radio. Stepping up to the R-Design trim, a six-speed manual transmission becomes standard. In addition, all trims get adjustable head restraints and fuel economy improves a bit.

On the Outside
Boasting a stylish wagon body style, the Volvo V50 is further enhanced with the attractive R-Design treatment, which includes a matte silver grille, side skirts, and front and rear spoilers.
From the Inside
In line with Volvo design distinguished by spare, angular elegance, the V50's cabin features a thin, trim waterfall center-stack but is a bit slight on space in the rear seat. Optionally available are luxury Nordic Oak wood inlays.
Driving Performance
While the 168-horsepower 2.4i is capable in normal traffic, traveling 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds, the R-Design sprints to 60 mph in an estimated 6.7 seconds with the manual transmission and 7.1 seconds with the automatic. The sport suspension and all-wheel drive grip of the R-Design makes the V50 easier to handle, particularly in inclement weather.
Safety Equipment
Standard safety features on the Volvo V50 include antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and whiplash-reducing front head restraints. Optional are integrated rear booster seats and a blind-spot warning system.
