A comfortable, safe, and roomier ride.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2005 Volvo V70 wagon makes a great choice for transporting a family. It offers extensive cargo space similar to an SUV or minivan simply by opening the rear hatch. It can be increased even more by folding down the seats. American and European styling fuse to offer an appealing vehicle. The great styling extends into the interior as well.

The Range

Body Styles: wagon
Engines: 2.4-liter five-cylinder, 2.5-liter five-cylinder
Transmissions: five-speed automatic, five-speed manual, six-speed manual
Models: Volvo V70, Volvo V70 2.5T, Volvo V70 T5, Volvo V70 R

What's New

The 2005 Volvo V70 gets newly revised headlamps and tail lamps along with color-keyed side moldings and lower sills, a front grille, and flat blade windshield wipers. Other updates concern the audio system, seating, and center console. A trip computer now comes standard. New options include run-flat tires, rear park assist, and satellite radio.

The 2.5T gets updated color-keyed bumpers with chrome inserts, a geartronic transmission, and foglamps as standard equipment. Volvo offers an optional wood steering wheel and the T5 gets 257 horsepower and speed-sensitive steering.

Exterior

The 2005 Volvo V70 offers a combination of refined American and European styling. The sharp styling appeals to both sides of the pond. Its fresh styling attracts the younger crowd, but anyone can appreciate the sleek lines of this wagon.

Interior

Newly redesigned seating highlights the 2005 Volvo V70. The comfort level is definitely there. The driver's seat offers height adjustment and has manually adjustable lumbar support. Remote power door locks, heated power mirrors, and cruise control provide just a few convenient V70 features. The interior also features a front console with storage, front and rear cup holders, front door pockets, front seatback storage, and remote trunk release. The driver benefits from tilt and telescopic steering and audio and cruise controls on the steering wheel. The driver also enjoys the leather trim on the shift knob and the leather steering wheel. The optional wood steering wheel lets the driver know he has arrived.

Everyone benefits from the dual-zone air-conditioning and front and rear reading lights. The V70 also comes standard with an AM/FM/CD stereo. Interior colors include graphite, taupe, and taupe/light taupe.

Performance & Handling

While the 2005 Volvo V70 aims to please young families who have safety and security as priorities, there's still a driving enthusiast within all of us and the V70 doesn't disappoint. An inline five-cylinder engine powers all of the V70s, with only the base model not having turbocharging. The base model comes equipped with a five-speed manual while the V70 R employs a six-speed manual transmission. A five-speed automatic comes standard for the other trim levels.

Safety

Volvo is synonymous with safety. Every model comes with front side airbags and side curtain airbags. Traction control and anti-lock four-wheel disc brakes come standard; the T5 and R have standard antiskid systems which remain optional on the other models. Integrated rear child seats and a rear-facing third row seat provide options that enhance safety and appeal to families. Volvo has also included its whiplash protection system for passengers and the driver.
